Canaan refers to the fertile land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, promised to Abraham and his descendants. It was the destination toward which Abraham and Sarah journeyed after leaving Mesopotamia.
Patriarchal Encampments
Throughout the generations of the patriarchs, Isaac and Jacob maintained dwellings, herds, and family burial grounds in Canaan. Although famine later prompted the migration of the family into Egypt, the ancestral connection to the land remained enduring.
Conquest and Settlement
Following the Exodus from Egypt, Moses dispatched twelve scouts to survey the fortified cities and produce of the region. While ten scouts expressed doubt, Joshua and Caleb urged the assembly to trust the promise. The territory later became known as the Promised Land upon the entry and settlement of the tribes.
