Egypt was the regional empire along the Nile that shaped the formative history of Israel. The relationship began favorably when Joseph rose to high office under Pharaoh, providing food and land for his family during a severe regional famine.
Oppression and Deliverance
In subsequent generations, a new dynasty subjected the growing Hebrew population to forced labor and harsh decrees. In this environment, Miriam watched over the infant Moses along the riverbanks, preserving the leader who would eventually demand their freedom and lead the Exodus.
After the Departure
The departure from Egypt left lasting cultural and religious impacts. Even during the wilderness journey, memories of Egypt resurfaced during moments of hunger and crisis, including the fabrication of the golden calf supervised by Aaron. The deliverance from Egyptian bondage remains central to the covenant law.
