The Nile is the principal river of Egypt, vital to the agriculture, transport, and economy of the ancient realm. In the biblical narrative, it forms the backdrop for the early life of Moses and the subsequent contest between Israel and Pharaoh.

    The River and the Exodus

In response to Pharaoh's decree ordering the death of male Hebrew infants, Moses's mother placed him in a waterproofed basket among the river reeds. His sister Miriam kept watch until the princess retrieved and adopted the child.

    Plagues and Judgment

The river later served as the focus of divine judgment during the confrontation with Pharaoh, when its waters were struck and turned to blood, disrupting the life and water supply of Egypt prior to the departure of the Israelites toward the Red Sea and Mount Sinai.
