Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the firstborn of Rachel. Favored by his father with an ornate tunic and prophetic dreams of leadership, he incurred the jealousy of his brothers, who sold him into slavery in Egypt.
Rise in Egypt
After enduring false imprisonment in Egypt, Joseph interpreted the troubling dreams of Pharaoh, foreseeing seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. Appointed vizier over the entire realm, he administered the vast storage and distribution of grain throughout the crisis.
Reconciliation and Settlement
When famine compelled his brothers to travel from Canaan to buy food, Joseph tested their repentance before revealing his true identity. Forgiving his family, he invited Jacob and the entire household to settle in Goshen, securing their survival generations before the rise of Moses and the Exodus.
