Jacob, later named Israel, was the third patriarch of the covenant line and the father of the twelve tribes. The son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham, Jacob's early life involved keen rivalry with his brother Esau over the birthright and the paternal blessing.
Journey and Family
Fleeing to Haran, Jacob labored for twenty years for his uncle Laban, marrying Leah and Rachel and fathering twelve sons and a daughter. Upon returning to Canaan, he experienced a transformative wrestling encounter at Peniel, where he received the name Israel.
Reconciliation and Migration
In his advanced age, Jacob faced profound grief over the supposed loss of his beloved son Joseph. Years later, upon learning that Joseph was alive and serving as governor in Egypt, Jacob migrated with his entire household to the region of Goshen, where he blessed his descendants before his death.
